OUR STORY

Our story began 40 years ago in South Africa. Lara and I were best friends. I immigrated to the Uk in 1993. I got involved with homelessness and studied a variety of subjects. Lara studied other subjects whilst in South Africa. We both got married and unfortunately, both marriages failed.

When COVID-19 hit, the idea of Kharis was born. Kharis is derived from the Greek word CHARIS, meaning GRACE. In my opinion what was needed for my personal healing was this thing called Grace. Self-help methods such as positive thinking, conventional talk therapies and denial failed at every juncture. This frustration was the catalyst I needed to do something with the experience I had and to work on methods to help others in the same situation as I was.

Initially, it was just doing therapy, hypnosis, and later, Integral Eye Movement Therapy (IEMT) was studied as a means to help people who were in the same type of relationships as those I had just escaped from.

Lara came to the UK in 2021 and we continued working on ways to reach people who could do with our help. Along the way, we discovered we had feelings for each other and a relationship blossomed from brotherly-sisterly love to a romantic one. Not only are we life partners, but also work partners in the life mission that is Kharis Change Works CIC.

“About 10 years ago my sister that lives over 6000 miles away from me told me that she was feeling very ill. This upset me so much and then had so much stress and anxiety. Not long after that a therapist, my son, Mark Potter, who was not qualified at that time but is now qualified then did the IEMT therapy on me. I could feel almost straight away how the stress and anxiety leave me. A few days ago my sister told me that she was going through the same thing. Not long after I heard from my sister I realised that I felt very calm and not anxious at all.I then thought about it and wondered if the IEMT therapy I had 10 years ago was still working in me. I can only thank the therapist for doing the therapy on me.”

by Maude

“Hi Mark, thank you for getting in touch with me. Things have seemed to calm down quite a bit and and have seen a big improvement in my work due to not being so triggered by my feelings when similar things seem to be happening to them. I can’t thank you enough for helping me .”

by Emma

“The memory just poofed. Vanished.”

by Mia

“The experience was very different, unsure what it really was, but felt lighter after.”

by Kimberley

”Very calm not thinking about that experience. Very distant.”

by Fitzroy

“Once completed the feeling wasn’t as intense, but still visible. The feeling in my chest disappeared, it doesn’t feel as bad as it was.”

by Mase

"It detected some residual trauma, even after 5 years of therapy. I felt my Vagus Nerve being activated. After the eye movements, I found it quite difficult to recall the traumatic memories - like a slight confusion. Suddenly they seemed distant and my brain was being distracted by other matters.

After the session, it seemed the hypervigilance, which is often switched on in me, had turned off. I tried to think of the incidents but the Vagus Nerve and emotions wouldn't activate.

I've dreamed of school at night vividly these last few days, as I have done for years. However, this time in the dreams I was an adult looking on in a calmer scenario, or an outsider in another school, as though watching a TV show, not living in the terror."
